The University of Tasmania is among Australia’s oldest and most distinguished
universities, and has an outstanding record of academic achievement and leadership
stretching back more than 110 years.
It is the State’s only university and is not only a generator of ideas and
knowledge, but makes a significant contribution to the economic, social and cultural
fabric of Tasmania.
It offers a diversity of academic disciplines with more than 100 courses and 70
different degrees available in business and law, the sciences and health sciences,
education and the humanities. In these the University enjoys an enviable reputation
for teaching and for research which is recognised locally, nationally and internationally.
And while the University of Tasmania’s communication and application of knowledge
is international in scope, it also reflects the distinctiveness of Tasmania.
Some of the priority areas for research are:
-
Antarctic and Southern Ocean studies
-
National and state development
-
Natural environment and wilderness
-
Population and community studies
To support these priorities, the University is a core partner in a number of Cooperative
Research Centres that undertake quality research in forestry, aquaculture, Antarctic
climate and ecosystems, and tourism.
The University also has seven research institutes – the Centre for Ore Deposit
Research (CODES), the Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies (IASOS),
the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), the Tasmanian Institute
for Agricultural Research (TIAR), the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute (TLRI), the
Tasmanian Institute of Law Enforcement Studies (TILES), and the Menzies Centre for
Population and Health Research.
Graduates from around the globe find exciting opportunities in these world-class
centres. The 14,000 students at the University of Tasmania enjoy the best of all
worlds: excellence in academic teaching and research, and a campus life free from
the overcrowding and access difficulties suffered at many larger universities.
The Tasmania Scholarships program supports the University’s commitment to
offer students an exemplary learning environment.
