Study Areas

This course is a continuation of the units covered in the Diploma of Applied Science (Deck Watchkeeper). It incorporates all the requirements necessary under the STCW 95 Convention to attain a Chief Mate's and Master's Certificate of Competency <3000GT or unlimited, issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Chief Mate/Master) has been developed to provide students with contemporary expertise for careers in shipboard operation in the capacity of senior officer and command within the international merchant shipping industry in the areas of:

  • Maritime business and law
  • Command navigation and voyage planning
  • Advanced cargo operations
  • Ship stability and stress monitoring
  • Emergency response
  • Global maritime communication
  • Shipboard management
  • Ship regulation
  • Leadership and coordination of a seagoing unit.

Special Requirements

  • DipAppSci (Deck Watchkeeper), DipNautSci (Deck Watchkeeper), DipAppSci (Mate/Master<500T) or an equivalent qualification;
  • Sea time approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as outlined in Marine Orders Part 3. See www.amsa.gov.au
  • Students with English as second language need an IELTS score of at least 6.

*The course consists of 13 units of study and can be completed in two study blocks over 8 months of full time study. These units correspond with Stage 3 Phase 4 and Phase 5 of the Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Nautical Science) program. Students may be granted an exemption from a unit of study by virtue of studies completed at a recognised tertiary institution or by holding an appropriate Vocational and Technical Education (VTE) qualification. There are three student intakes each year.
