The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Nautical Science) has been developed to provide students with contemporary expertise for careers in shipboard operation in the capacity of senior officer and command within the international merchant shipping industry in the areas of:

  • Maritime business and law
  • Command navigation and voyage planning
  • Advanced Cargo operations
  • Ship stability and stress monitoring
  • Emergency response
  • Global Maritime communication
  • Shipboard management
  • Ship regulation
  • Leadership and coordination of a seagoing unit.

This program has been developed in response to industry demand for a pathway for students to complete all academic study for senior qualifications prior to obtaining an AMSA Deck Watchkeeper qualification. This is a training option required by a number of clients including Australian and overseas shipping companies.

Special Requirements

AMC requests completion of Grade 12 with satisfactory achievements in Mathematics and Science, and Grade 10 English.

*The course consists of 46 units of study and can be completed over 6 phases of full time study. Study is normally interrupted by periods of sea service. As a result, the program will normally take up to four years to complete. There are up to two student intakes each year, in February and July. Students may be granted an exemption from a unit of study by virtue of studies completed at a recognised tertiary institution or by holding an appropriate Vocational and Technical Education (VTE) qualification.

Further study options

  • With additional sea time the student can undertake the AMSA oral examinations for Chief Mate and thence Master, which allows the candidate to sail as a senior officer on trading vessels.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Maritime Operations)

Career opportunities

This course provides an international qualification which allows the student to become a Deck Watchkeeping Officer on any trading vessel.

With additional sea time the student can undertake the AMSA oral examinations for Chief Mate and thence Master, which allows the candidate to sail as a senior officer on trading vessels.
