Selection Procedures

To be considered for admission to a course you must

  • meet at least one of the general University entry requirements; and
  • satisfy any course prerequisites and specific entry requirements.

Please note that meeting the University’s admission requirements does not guarantee you entry to the course of your choice. Some courses have limited places available. You will be selected in competition with other eligible applicants. Refer to the Course and Unit website http://courses.utas.edu.au/ for prerequisites and special entry requirements. If you cannot satisfy prerequisites or special requirements, and consider you have a case for selection on other grounds, you should include an explanatory note with your Application for Admission.

Quota selection

Courses at the University may be subject to quota selection, as some courses have a limited number of places and high numbers of applications.

Selection of applicants with Senior Secondary school qualifications will, for most courses, be based on the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) or equivalent.  These applicants will be selected in rank order. Where selection is based on other than an ATAR, such as in Performing Arts courses, all applicants will be ranked in merit order, on the basis of selection criteria determined by the relevant Faculty Admissions Committee.

Entry pathways

With the introduction of the UTAS Pre‐Degree Framework, there are a number of options for students who might not meet the requirements to gain entry into a Bachelor level degree.  The Pre‐Degree programs enable students to engage in a supportive introduction and transition into university study.

If you have not met the entry requirements or prerequisites for the course you have applied for you may be offered a place in an alternative course, such as a Diploma in University Studies, and can eventually work your way up to a Bachelor level course.

UTAS offers a range of preparation, transition and bridging programs as well as foundation level units to assist you to prepare for Bachelor level study.

Information about the University Preparation Program (UPP) can be found here www.futurestudents.utas.edu.au/university-preparation-program and the Diploma in University Studies here www.utas.edu.au/utas-college/diploma-of-university-studies

For information on your chosen course of study, please contact the Uni Info Centre on 1300 363 864 or email course.info@utas.edu.au

Credit

Some applicants will be eligible to apply for credit for previous study. An Application for Credit is an application to count a unit or subject already passed at UTAS or another educational institution, towards the course for which you are now applying. Restrictions on credit may apply depending on how long ago the studies were completed.

Several courses have credit articulation arrangements with TAFE and details of these can be found at http://www.futurestudents.utas.edu.au/tafe-polytech.

If you wish to be assessed for credit please complete the Application for Credit form available in the Forms & Guides section of this site. If all the documents required to assess your eligibility for credit are received on time, you may be advised of the result of your application for credit when offered a place.

Applicants who have participated in one of the UTAS College Programs (e.g. Higher Achiever Program, Prelude, Overture, Languages, Visual and Performing Arts or Philosophy) may be eligible for credit.  Applicants should fill out the credit application form and contact their faculty.

Australian Maritime College seafaring applicants who are seeking credit for STCW95 Short Courses should bring with them all certified copies of all STCW95 Short Course Certificates and Certificates of Competency including endorsements to orientation day.
